The Relationship between Maternal Depression and Behavioral Issues in Children: Effortful Control as Moderator
Kim Hyun-Ji

Song Hyun-Joo
Abstract
This study aimed to examine effortful control as moderator between maternal depressive symptoms and behavioral issues in preschool-aged children. Participants included 63 children, ages 3-6. Effortful control was assessed via behavioral battery (3 tasks) and scored based on ratings provided by mothers and teachers. Both maternal depression and behavioral problems were measured and reported by the mothers. Data was analyzed using correlation analysis, ANOVA, and regression analysis, and the primary findings are as follows: First, effortful control does moderate maternal depression and problem behavior in preschool-aged children. Second, sex and age did not directly impact effortful control; however, only the effortful control battery includes age as a variable. Finally, maternal depression directly impacts behavioral issues in children. Results and limitations are discussed.
